Protection against arteriosclerosis

Formulations for heart health

According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress. This mechanism is key for the health of our arteries, since it prevents the future appearance of thrombos, a process known as artheriosclerosis, (one of the more relevant risk factors involved in heart attacks and strokes).

Cardiovascular diseases constitute the first cause of death worldwide. (Global Status report of non-communicable diseases 2010. Geneve. World Health Organization, 2011).

Virgin olive oil has proven to be protective against the development of cardiovascular pathologies, not only because of its monounsaturated fatty acids, but also due to other bioactive compounds such as hydroxytyrosol.

Hytolive® has demonstrated a very important activity as an anti-platelet aggregation agent.

Heart attacks and strokes consist mainly of accute processes, most of them caused by an obstruction that avoids the normal blood flow to the heart or the brain. The most frequent cause is an increase of fatty deposits on the internal walls of the blood vessels. The heart disease and stroke can be also caused by the bleeding of vessels into the brain or by the formation of blood clots.

The combination of omega-3 and Hytolive® is probably one of the most sensible formulations from the commercial and scientific point of view.

Protection against arteriosclerosis

Arteriosclerosis

Arteriosclerosis is one of the main risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. It is provoked by the accumulation of cholesterol and lipids that difficult blood flow through the vessels, increasing the risk of obstructions. Lipids (cholesterol and tryglicerides) and inflammatory cells start being deposited on the arteries walls.

Cholesterol is a kind of fat (lipid) considered key for the cells’ life. An excess or deficiency, can be dangerous for human health.

The real problem arises when these lipids oxidize, initiating inflammatory processess and increasing cardiovascular risk. The LDL cholesterol is thus more susceptible to oxidation.

Drugs as statins and products as omega-3, are recurrent treatments to reduce the cholesterol and tryglicerides concentrations in plasma, but both of them will always be present in our arteries. The key is to keep them away from oxidating processes.

Treatments that combine omega-3 fatty acids (EPA y DHA) and hydroxytyrosol, exert a double and complementary activity, by reducing the lipids in blood and avoiding their oxidation.

Both ingredients have a health claim approved by EFSA under the art. 13 (1924/2006 Health Claims regulation).

The combination of omega 3 and hydroxytyrosol is very attractive as it combines the Mediterranean and Asian Diets. This allows consumers to better understand the benefits. This way, marketers will be able to show consumers the advantages of olive polyphenols and hydroxytyrosol.

Products addressing skin care

Hydroxytyrosol's high antioxidant activity protects the skin from the damage of free radicals. Adding hydroxytyrosol to products that prevent aging and protect from UV rays is also an interesting opportunity.

One of the main and most succesful applications is skin whitening.

Antioxidant formulations

Studies indicate that consumption of hydroxytyrosol is associated to its ability to scavenge Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and to enhance the endogenous antioxidant status.

Hydroxytyrosol has shown a strong activity as a free radical scavenger. It is with no doubt, among the most powerful antioxidants available in the vegetable kingdom. It has also shown to increase internal gluthation levels. Gluthation forms part of our internal antioxidative system.

Anti-inflammatory protection

Sports; antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity

The addition of Hytolive® to drinks or products focusing on sports can be very attractive, since it increases the yield and mitigates the consequences of oxidative stress produced during and after exercise. Practice of sports generates a big number of free radicals in our body. The consumption of highly bioavailable antioxidants supports the protection of the body.

Regarding the anti-inflammatory properties, a wide number of studies show that olive polyphenols and hydroxytyrosol possess a high anti-inflammatory activity. Hydroxytyrosol is the compound from olive extracts with more anti-inflammatory properties.

Hydroxytrosol is the major anti-inflammatory compound in aqueous olive extracts by impairing cytokine and chemokyne production in macrophages.Natalie Richard et alt. 2011.
